The Story of Us

Hi there! Welcome to our story!

The First Meeting

Eriel and I met when we were freshmen at the University of Washington. We both lived in McMahon Hall and happened to live right across the hall from each other. We met as I was rushing into an elevator after a long day.

“What floor?” he asks.

“Six,” I reply, clutching my coffee like it was the last coffee in the world. I had pretty much just woken up from a long Chemistry lecture and was a little out of it, so I didn’t hear what he said next. In my half-asleep, non-caffeinated mind I thought he said something about my coffee. “What? Did you say you wanted some of my coffee?”

As soon as the words left my mouth I realized how ridiculous it sounded but it was too late — the words were out. “Umm.. no?” he looks back at me like I’m a crazy person.

Awesome, I think. I’m trapped riding up this elevator in awkward silence because I couldn’t keep my mouth shut until AFTER I drank my coffee. Needless to say, as soon as the doors opened, I bolted out of there and hoped I’d never see this guy again.

He gets off on the same floor as me.

He heads down the same hall as me.

I realize he lives in the cluster across from me and immediately, I start blabbering quickly because I do that in awkward situations. “Oh you live across from me! What’s your name? I’m Wendy!”

I’m not even sure what else I said before I waved bye and escaped into my cluster. I distinctly remember thinking to myself, well, that was awkward, let’s hope I never see him again! Turns out we both had 9:30 classes every day and I proceeded to run into him at the elevator every morning.

The Friendship

My clustermates and his clustermates all ended up being friends and we all hung out together frequently. We had marathons watching the show Heroes together or just having movie nights. They had a never ending stream of people playing Guitar Hero. We became good friends.

The second year of undergrad found us living at the same apartment complex, each having roommates that were our clustermates the previous year. We would all gather at my apartment to watch either Heroes or MacGyver or just have movie nights in general.

The First Date

Since we all would hang out together often, I wasn’t even sure we were on a date until we left for the date. Eriel asked if I would like to get dinner one Friday. I said yes and then proceeded to agonize over whether or not it was a date to my ever so patient roommate. She told me to go and if he asked why the rest of them didn’t go, just say they were busy (in case he didn’t mean for it to be a date).

Turns out it was just the two of us getting dinner at P.F. Chang’s and then after, as he walked me back to my apartment, I asked, “so.. was this a date?” To which he responded, “I guess so.”

Now, he claims his intonation was a “I guess so!” as in, yes! it was! awesome!

But to me, at that time, I was thinking, “what in the world does THAT mean??”

Thank goodness for my roommate who patiently listened to me blab about this for an hour after I got home that night.

Well we ended up having more dates so I guess that question was solved. 🙂

The Long Distance

I was accepted to dental school out of state and had the tough decision to go and do the whole long distance thing. We had been dating about two years at this point, seeing each other almost every day. It was a rough transition but we made it work and after four long years, here we are!

We are both so excited to start our new life together!
